“zazen practice is the direct expression of our true nature. strictly speaking, for a human being, there is no other practice than this practice; there is no other way of life than this life.”

sit with us

tuesdays online

Every Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time, South Sound Zen meets on Zoom for a brief period of zazen followed by discussion of a short reading from a Zen text.

Sign up on the “Contact” page to receive the Zoom link and to find out what we are currently reading.

thursdays in person

Every Thursday we sit from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Tacoma Buddhist Temple at 1717 S. Fawcett Ave. in Tacoma.

On the first Thursday of each month we sit one period of zazen, followed by chanting and a short reading. We then spend time together in semi-formal practice discussion or in informal conversation over tea and cookies.

On all other Thursdays, we sit two periods of zazen with kinhin (walking meditation) between. We close with chanting and a short reading.

All are welcome, and we are happy to give newcomers an orientation to the practice if you need one. If you would like an orientation, please arrive at 5:45.

Things to know about sitting with us:

  • Come to the main door of the temple. The door attendant locks the door at 6:05 p.m., so please be on time.

  • Cushions and chairs are provided, and we will help you find a sitting posture that works with your body.

  • It is suggested you wear dark clothing with no writing on it, if possible.

  • Be aware that we do burn a little incense during meditation.

  • Please do not bring any animals to the temple.
